New Year’s Beauty Resolution

It’s that “new year, new me” time of the year again when we all start to write up our New Year’s Resolutions. To name a personal few would be the cliche exercise, eat healthily and save money. While we may not necessarily reach these goals, they are a good guide to which way we would like to go in the future. In saying this, we must not forget our beauty resolutions.

1. Get more sleep
Ladies, it’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Known as one of nature’s most powerful beauty treatments, sleep is responsible for rebalancing your body’s hydration, ensuring that you have a radiant, glowing complexion. This year, strive to get 7-9 hours of sleep daily. You’d be surprised at how much difference this would make!

2. Drink more water
Say goodbye to dull skin and brittle nails in 2017 by drinking 6 to 8 cups of fluid per day. Believe it or not, drinking enough water could be the answer to your biggest beauty troubles. As an extra step, infuse your water with slices of strawberries or lemon for an extra boost of vitamins and antioxidants!

3. Clean makeup brushes
Make it a point to clean your makeup appliances once a week to not only extend its lifespan but to also avoid introducing dirt and bacteria to your skin. Often forgotten, tools such as eyelash curlers, tweezers, and nail clippers also gather dirt, and should be wiped down and disinfected with small amounts of isopropyl alcohol.
As a tip, remember to lay your brushes flat to dry in order to prevent water from dripping down into the barrel of the brush and loosening the bristles.

4. Wear sunscreen daily
Sun damage is often the root cause of premature ageing as repeated exposure to UV rays quickly break down the elastin in your skin. To avoid wrinkles, fine lines, and sun spots, make it a new year’s resolution to incorporate sunscreen into your daily makeup routine. Remember— sun damage is cumulative. Spare your skin tomorrow by wearing sunscreen today!

When choosing what sunscreen to use, it is important to pick out something with at least an SPF of 30 to ensure your skin is protected from pigmentation. My personal favourites are the CNP Omega Perfection Sunblock SPF50+, and the Innisfree Eco Safety No Sebum Sunblock, if I want something non-sticky and lightweight.

5. Spring clean

There’s always a little bit of heartbreak every time you have to throw out a half-full product, albeit the fact that it’s expired more than a year ago. However, focus on starting 2017 with a clean slate! Go through your drawers and throw out every product that has been opened for more than 6 months.
If you come across a product that you don’t use much, such as a foundation that no longer matches your skin tone, give it to a friend instead of letting it rot at the bottom of your closet.

6. Hair masks
From hot ironing to blow drying our hair, most of us are guilty of torturing our hair on a daily basis. Hair masks are hence, an easy solution to bring some bounce back to dry or damaged hair. This year, get in the habit of using hair masks once a week. Sounds like a huge commitment? It really isn’t— not all hair masks have to be left in for hours. In fact, there are masks that do the job in 2 or 3 minutes, ideal for applying while you shave in the shower!

7. Figure out a skincare routine, and stick with it
With skincare, consistency is key. Much like a workout routine, you can’t expect to see results in the first few days. However, once a routine is established and maintained, results will flourish.

8. Be brave and try new things

Many of us are guilty of sticking to a makeup routine that we know works for us. However, in 2017, take the chance to step out your comfort zone. Whether it’s something as subtle as broadening the range of scents you use or opting for a smokey eye for your next Girls Night Out, switch up your makeup routine and dare to experiment with new looks!

9. Watch tutorials

Trying new trends can be a foreign and daunting task. Lucky for us, Youtube is a treasure trove of beauty gurus sharing their best-kept tips and tricks, providing step-by-step guides showing how to achieve your desired looks.
If you’re not sure where to start, Dasha Kim (https://www.youtube.com/user/dahyeshkakim) and PONY (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT-_4GqC-yLY1xtTHhwY0hA) are entertaining Korean makeup gurus who love curating looks inspired by different occasions, as well as simply guiding beginners through trends like colour contouring and how to properly apply eyeliner onto monolids.

10. No makeup day

For many beauty lovers, myself included, makeup application is a form of art—a routine to help you snap out of that morning daze and start your day. However, every once in a while, it’s wise to give your skin a breather.
For those who absolutely cannot fathom stepping out of the house without any makeup on, perhaps opt for something lighter, such as BB creams or tinted moisturisers.
